The name diamond is derived from the Greek word "Adamas" which means ''invincible". The great artist Michael Jackson wrote a song called "Diamonds Are Invincible". From being the most precious stone worn by women through ages to being the hardest material that is used for industrial cutting and polishing, diamond is truly invincible. Whether for their beauty, the rareness or unique properties, diamonds have always been sought after by humans. Diamonds were also carried by soldiers as a talisman in battles and believed to protect them during wars. During the Dark Age, it was also believed that diamonds could heal wounds and cure illnesses if ingested.
Diamond is widely used for engagement or wedding rings. The medieval Italians believed diamonds would seal an unbreakable pact on the marriage. The first diamond ring was gifted by Archduke Maximillian of Austria to his betrothed, Mary of Burgundy in 1477.
Until the 18th century, India was known to be the only source of diamonds. However, Africa, Australia, Russia and Canada are also known to be sources of diamonds. Since most of the known diamond mines around the world have been depleted and diamonds are rare to find these days, scientists started growing diamond in labs. The chemical bonds within a lab grown diamond are the same as that of a mined diamond. A lab grown diamond is also optically identical to a naturally mined diamond. Despite being almost similar to natural diamonds, lab grown diamonds are more affordable. Lab grown diamond engagement ring is also a popular choice amongst couples these days. Both types are equally sparkling, come in same colours, clarity, sizes and shapes. The only difference is the environment they are grown in. Natural diamonds form in nature and takes thousands of years to be formed while lab grown diamonds are grown in labs and can be produced in large quantities in lesser time.
Diamonds will always signify power, resilence and strength. It will always remain unconquerable. Hence, they say “ a diamond is forever”.
