Working Out the Correct Dimensions for a New Shed |
Posted: September 19, 2017 |
Working out the dimensions you need for a new garden shed can be challenging. If you’re struggling to figure out the right size shed to suit your needs, we’re here to help with these tips. How do you plan to use your garden shed? Determining how you plan to use your garden shed will help you calculate how much space you'll need. Do you need a garden shed just for storing lawn equipment? Will you use it for your gardening hobby? Do you want a workshop to work on your DIY projects? A man-cave? Figuring this out will help drive the design. For instance, if you plan to use your shed as an outdoor entertaining spot, make sure you have enough room in the space for some tables, chairs and the BBQ. Using a few stakes, some string and a line level to measure the area you want to place your shed in is a helpful way of discerning how much space you’ll need for your garden shed. What do you want to store in your shed? Make a list of what you plan to store inside your garden shed. Once you decide on what items you want to store, lay them on the ground and measure them. This will give you an idea of how much space you will need. It is recommended that you add extra space for moving around inside your shed. Don’t underestimate how quickly the contents of your shed will accumulate. Over time, you will collect more tools and equipment and will need the storage space to allow for it. Buying a garden shed that is at least a size larger than what you currently need is a great idea. For example, if after measuring your tools and equipment you may determine that you will need a 3m x 1.5m shed, consider purchasing a 3m x 3m shed to prepare for future storage needs. Investing in more storage now, instead of just enough, will be a wise decision. The right accessories, such as shelving or tool holders, are essential to maximise space in your garden shed and to keep tools and equipment off the ground. EasyShed provide some great ways to organise your tools and equipment. Where do you want to put your shed? How much room you have on your property and where you want to place your shed are key factors when figuring out the dimensions that you need. With regards to shed placement, most councils require sheds to be placed at least 900 millimetres (0.9 metres) from the left, right or back boundaries of a suburban house block. You cannot put a shed at the front of your garage or at the front of your house without getting a permit from your local council. The Department of Planning and Environment classifies garden sheds as “Exempt and Complying Development” so you would not need to apply for a Development Application or a building permit as long as you follow the tips listed in this post. However, as council rules differ from state to state, it is best to check with your local council to make sure that your garden shed will be compliant.
